<hi style=afpcap>The McDonnell Douglas Phantom was originally allocated the designation F-110 which was the next available in the Century Series. The prototype fighter was the F-110A, while a pair of reconnaissance examples were designated RF-110A. Three F4H-1, later redesignated as F-4Bs, were borrowed from the Navy for evaluation with US Air Force serials allocated from 1962, although they carried the last five of the Navy serial for a period of their loan. A unified designation system was introduced in 1962 with the F-4H and the F-110 becoming the F-4B and F-4C respectively. It is interesting to note the position of the 'US Air Force 'title on the rear fuselage, and the size of the Tactical Air Command badge on the fin.</hi>
